ABYSS JOAL Headphone: Master Tape Sound Explained

Quick Answer

The ABYSS JOAL is a high-performance headphone that recreates the natural, unprocessed sound of master tapes. It excels with rock from the '50s–'70s, EDM, jazz, blues, classical, and bluegrass, but its revealing character may not suit listeners who prefer a warm, forgiving tuning.

Diagnosing Whether the JOAL Is Right for You

• Symptom: You want to hear your music exactly as it was recorded, with no added warmth or coloration. The JOAL's master tape sound is designed for this preference.
• Likely Cause: Many consumer headphones add a 'smiley-face' EQ or extra bass to flatter modern pop, which masks the original recording.
• Corrective Action: Choose the JOAL if you value transparency and dynamic range. Pair it with a quality amplifier and a cable adapter that matches your source—options are available during purchase. Confirm your amp's connector type before ordering the cable adapter.
• When to Stop or Choose Another Option: If you prefer a forgiving, warm headphone that hides poor recordings, or if you mainly listen to compressed pop, the JOAL may be too revealing. Consider a different model in the ABYSS lineup instead.
